ACS Strategic Priorities 2018-2019

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Board of Regents met June 7-9, 2018 and presented the following 2018-2019 strategic priorities:

1. Division of research and optimal care / continuous quality improvement 

    1. Next Phase of Registry Operations

    2. Messaging Value and Usability

    3. The Standardization / Alignment of verification and accreditation programs – ongoing with progress

        1. Internal

        2. External

2. Division of research and optimal care / trauma

    1. Focus on Data quality, including Trauma Registry development

    2. Development of research infrastructure

    3. Development of International Trauma Quality Programs

    4. Transition Trauma Education program onto the LMS Platform

    5. Manage standers and their integration across the Trauma Quality Programs

    6. NASEM implementation: trauma system development as the framework for disaster and mass casualty response

    7. Firearm injury prevention

    8. Stop the Bleed Program – targeted growth and dissemination

3. Division of research and optimal care / cancer

    1. Completion of Staff reorganization (50% complete)

    2. Launch, promote and manage NCORP CCDR protocol Improving surgical care and outcomes in older cancer patients through implementation of an efficient pre-surgical toolkit (OPTI-Surg).

    3. Revision of cancer program standards to include:

        1. Reevaluate relevancy

        2. Focus on patient outcomes

        3. Integration of the Operative Standard Manual

    4. Finalize business plan for AJCC, including:

        1. Licensing

        2. eBook

        3. Staging calculator

        4. Analysis and response to 8th edition user feedback

4. Education

    1. Revise Core programs

    2. Take innovative programs to the next level

    3. Brand new exciting programs, i.e., Faculty development and standard setting

    4. Be at the national table for educational standards

    5. Establish large scale databases tracking education and identifying gaps and successes

5. Advocacy

    1. Engage at the federal and state levels on education and regulations related to the opioid epidemic

    2. Work to modify the MIPS Program to match the payment program with a true surgical quality program

    3. Work with CMS on surgical globals initiative

6. Member Services

    1. Improve Cross College Communication

    2. Regents, Governors, Advisory Councils, Division Directors/staff and Members

    3. Implement International Strategy

        1. ACS Hub in Africa

        2. Education and Outreach to potential Future Surgeons

        3. Improve Surgical care in underserved populations

    4. Effectively support chapters

7. Finance & Facilities

    1. Develop pricing strategy including pricing objectives, pricing methods and other factors

    2. Complement/Implement record retention policy and storage

    3. Collaborate with Executive Directors and the Foundation Board to Develop a Strategic Plan for the ACS Foundation – Get meeting set

    4. Begin the re-Stack Project

8. Human Resources

    1. LMS Implementation and development/transition content

    2. Extend Compensation Module Pilot (IT, Trauma)

    3. Enhance the employee Onboarding program – buddy program just launched

    4. Benefits

        1. SMRP, SPP, 457b vendor administrative review

        2. Conduct analysis/Benchmark

9. Integrated Communications

    1. Provide leadership in the development and implementation of a more integrated and robust marketing plan for the organization that makes greater use of strategic forethought, data, and focused messaging

    2. Develop and Implement a Quality Communication Plan

    3. Begin to move JACS readers online

10. Information Technology

    1. Standardization of accreditation and verification websites and supporting Aptify database

    2. Support implementation of LCMS Solution (Education, Trauma and PI)

    3. Aptify strategic projects implementation

    4. Endpoint (desktop) replacements to modern Win 10 / Office 2016

    5. Optimize and standardize audio / visual communications throughout the College (shared by Conventions & Meetings and PI)

    6. Staff Reorganization for continued improvements on efficiency

    7. Eliminate all long term on-site consulting services

    8. EU CGPR response

    1. Clinical Congress Organizing Committee and Sub-Committees (C&M)

        1. Analysis of data and financials

    2. Examination by Legal of hotel contract templates and update clauses as needed

    3. AM Business Plan 5-Year implementation: Chapter Management

        1. AM Financial Analysis and Sustainability

12. ACS Foundation

    1. Increase leadership support of the Foundation

    2. Increase RAS/YFA donations to the Foundation

    3. Reduce the cost of raising $1 to $0.33
